What We Know Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were admitted to medical facilities.

The victims are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She described the moments before the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she said.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later moved to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
