They're Doing across America What They Executed with Christianity

Trumpism's most telling and characteristic moments – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of several weeks, the American president began displaying everyone his intentions for an ornate dance hall double the dimensions compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.

He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of casualties due to his slashing to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and presently research predicted his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – really, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking significant portions of the White House in order to erect a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which have business with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to witness the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were educated as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have watched over the years as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hate who approves specifically the brutality that he criticized in the Gospel; this change developed at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.

A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself

Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically the Savior is the core of any Christian faith, and since the rapidly expanding group within America may possess limited understanding of him since they are skeptics or doubters or nones. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of great price in biblical accounts.

Jesus' answer to violence is to offer the additional cheek – not as a demonstration of compliant endurance, but as a means to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing states that when an individual takes your coat you must offer him your sweater also.

The apparent and direct reality that the Jesus from scripture calls for a type of radical love concentrated on the impoverished is what has always made Christianity rather a provocative belief system: appealing to the populace, but because of its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.

A Battle for the Highest Among Us

So I have been encouraged to see the persistent defiance to Trump develop in this past year. It has served as great solace to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired voters to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We shall require to continue it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the best parts of American history.

The country is optimally secured, in other words, by reference to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by reference to what makes it distinctive and magnificent, which is the example of Jesus. In all circumstances does it mean feigning the worst regarding America and Christian faith was nonexistent; it represents both humility and belief, a blend that committed US believers should embrace.
