The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would emerge as a massive hit. “God bless the fans,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.” With the first season of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and the next chapter already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus. Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that. “It's like being an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being laughing uncontrollably,” he explains. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.” Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show. “We make no attempt to adjust our writing,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not influenced by online forums.” “It's wiser to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan concludes. The Big Question: Has Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus? Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… with some caveats. “We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I suspect we'll be doing that.” Then again, if they hit a wall, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on. “My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.” Of course, why not reference the legendary finales? “I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan adds, smiling. Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV.
