Igor Jesus Fires Twice as Nottingham Forest Round Off European Campaign with Victory over Ferencvaros

Forest striker in action
The Brazilian forward has now notched 11 goals in every tournament for the club this season.

Match Summary

  • Forest were already through to the play-offs.
  • A Ferencvaros defender own goal gives hosts a opening period lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts Forest in command.
  • Striker adds a third with a clinical effort in the second half.
  • The midfielder rounds off a great display with a spot-kick.

The Brazilian attacker found the net on two occasions as Nottingham Forest rounded off the group stage of the European competition with a convincing win against their Hungarian visitors at the home stadium.

Forest had previously guaranteed a place in the knockout round play-offs and entered this fixture with a slim possibility of making the top eight, although they needed other matches to go their way.

That did not happen but this assured performance will give the supporters belief that their team can come through the two-legged play-off to advance to the last 16.

A Ferencvaros midfielder did hit the upright with a headed effort inside the opening stages for the away team – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was dominantly the home side from then on.

They broke the deadlock in the early stages when a delivery from midfield was turned into his own net by the defender and added a second four minutes later – Jesus firing an effort in at the back post for his tenth strike of the season.

The forward's eleventh goal arrived early in the second half when he timed a run perfectly to escape the defence and then drive an effort beyond the shot-stopper.

The third strike killed off the visitors' aspirations of mounting a recovery and instead the hosts added a fourth when the excellent James McAtee converted a penalty after a infringement by the unfortunate Otvos inside the penalty area on Dan Ndoye.

The Europa League knockout phase play-off lottery takes place on Friday, 30 January (midday UK time), where Forest might face either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the entire team," said manager Sean Dyche.

"That was another step, but it is a good one."

Forest Analysis: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this season with six of his eleven strikes scored in the tournament.

His brace also means he has scored three goals in his previous two outings and the prospect of a challenge for his place in the forward line could be spurring him on.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this match from the stands.

That may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was outstanding against the opposition, delivering two superb goals and generally being a constant threat to the visitors' defence with his speed and runs.

Jesus was not the only one in catching the eye, with McAtee producing his finest display in a Forest jersey since joining from Manchester City last summer, while the Swiss international also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some fresh hope as they turn their attention to pulling further away from the bottom three when they host Crystal Palace on the weekend.

"All you can ask for is a reaction," added Dyche.

"I've never questioned their commitment or their dedication or integrity. It is just about displaying your ability.

"James was very good and Dan was super sharp. Jesus got another two and these are positive indicators."
