"Yes, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," Newsom remarked when pressed about contemplating a White House bid following the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that." Newsom's current term as governor ends in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is a long way off. "The future will decide," he said. Increased Visibility as a Trump Critic Newsom has emerged as a notable adversary of the Trump administration, employing his online platforms and pushing a proposition that would boost the party's representation in Congress in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has drawn criticism from critics. Clash on Transportation Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday appearance on Fox News. Duffy disclosed a strategy to withhold federal funds from the state and threatened eliminating the authority to provide CDLs. "I'm about to pull $160 million from California," Duffy declared, following a this week's fatal crash in the state involving an non-citizen commercial driver that caused loss of life and injured individuals. Newsom's office pointed out that the federal government had approved the individual's authorization multiple times, which permitted him to receive a commercial driver's license under national regulations. Duffy had before stated he was blocking $40m from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for truck drivers. Pointed Reply from the Administration "Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration retorted in a last month's release responding to Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, in contrast to this person, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Facts don't lie. The federal leadership misleads." Polling Data and Campaign Considerations A recent survey found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters indicated that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has risen to an average of 33.5% from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an average of more than 40% to current figures. Some time ago, the governor commented while on a trip several key regions that he had "no idea" about his intentions for the next presidential election. He noted his past difficulties, including being found to have a learning disability at the age of five. "The notion that a person who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, amazing," he said. "It's anyone's guess? I await who emerges in 2028 and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
